The work of Scarborough in Bloom and local volunteers play a critical
role in making the coastal resort floral and welcoming to visitors and their
perception of their visit. A good visitor experience will result in repeat
visits and will aid the local economy. Floral traffic islands with wire
sculptures along the main road routes to the town centre, beautiful containers
within the pedestrian areas backed up by a good street cleaning add to the
quality of the entry. The three flower beds within valley gardens were spectacular
from Valley Bridge it was good to meet the young
designers during our visit and the schools involved. The work of the volunteers
in the maintenance of all the commemorative seating on the Esplanade and
throughout the Town Centre was outstanding. The projects achieved in Old Town and
the Shuttleworth Gardens were outstanding and
demonstrated what local people can achieve when they are mobilised and work
together. The self managed Allotments at Sandybed and the work carried out by
the management committee not only to manage the lettings for the site but the
work they have done to make the place more colourful and their contributions to
wide Scarborough in Bloom initiative has to be commended. We were very
impressed at the progress made by the Friends of Dean Road Cemetery with the
wildflower boarder and their plans for the restoration of the Cemetery chapel
which will provide a community meeting place for the local area and transform
the landscape and dynamics of the Cemetery whist preserving a valuable historic
building feature of the Town.
